What is a kilim?
A kilim (also spelled kelim) is a handwoven rug without pile. Unlike a hand-knotted Persian rug — where each knot is laid by hand — a kilim is flat woven, with the colored threads forming the pattern. This makes a kilim thinner, lighter, and in many cases reversible: the back is almost as beautiful as the front. Its flat structure makes a kilim ideal for laying, layering over a larger rug, or even hanging as a wall hanging.

The types of kilims
Turkish (Anatolian) kilims

What to look for when buying a kilim rug?
- Material: choose 100% wool. Wool is strong, dirt-repellent, and lasts for generations.
- Dye: naturally (vegetable) dyed wool ages beautifully and takes on a lovely patina.
- Weaving technique: look for a tight, even weave and neat finishing at the edges.
- Size & color: measure your space and decide whether you want to lay the rug loosely or layer it over an existing rug.
