Plan a home viewingLooking to buy a Ziegler rug? A Ziegler is a hand-knotted rug with a low pile and soft, slightly faded colours: sand, ochre, rust, grey-blue and pale green. The name comes from the trading house Ziegler & Co., which had rugs knotted around Sultanabad (today’s Arak) in Persia from around 1880, as a lighter alternative to heavy classic Persian rugs.
Most Zieglers in our collection are knotted in Afghanistan from strong hand-spun wool with natural dyes: classic floral Feraghan and Bakhtiar designs, graphic Art Deco patterns, Samarkand motifs and modern, almost plain Zieglers. Popular sizes: 200 x 300 cm, 250 x 300 cm and 250 x 350 cm and larger. Visit us in Hilversum, Amstelveen or Groningen, or book a free home viewing.
Different types of Zieglers
Today, traditional Zieglers are still made, but other variants have also emerged: with whimsical, Art Nouveau-like patterns, with geometric patterns, or with ancient ornamental symbols. The vegetable dyes provide warmth, and their earthy tones make them easy to combine. Strong wool from Afghanistan ensures a durable character, and their low pile makes them suitable for all settings, including dining areas.
Frequently asked questions about Ziegler carpets
What is a Ziegler carpet?
A hand-knotted carpet with a short pile in soft earthy tones, originally conceived around 1880 as a lighter counterpart to classic Persians.
Are Ziegler carpets of good quality?
Yes. Zieglers are hand-knotted from strong Afghan wool and dyed with vegetable dyes. Their low pile makes them durable and suitable for intensive use.
Does a Ziegler fit into a modern interior?
Yes, precisely because of their subdued colours, Zieglers connect classic and modern styles excellently.
Are Zieglers suitable for a dining area?
Yes, thanks to their low pile, they lie flat and are suitable for all rooms, including dining areas.
