Since 1994 — Galerie Hamming van Seventer
Dutch specialist in hand-knotted Persian rugs and kilims. Three galleries, one family, one mission: a rug for life.
Galerie Hamming van Seventer is a Dutch family business with Armenian roots, specializing in hand-knotted oriental rugs and kilims. Since 1994, we have been the place where enthusiasts, collectors, and interior designers come for authentic pieces from Iran, Turkey, Afghanistan, and Morocco — as well as for rare Dutch rug heritage, such as our antique Deventer rugs from the Royal Deventer Carpet Factory.
The story — three decades of rug expertise
Our story begins in 1994 in the city center of Groningen. What started as a specialized gallery on Gedempte Zuiderdiep — founded from an old Armenian family business with generations of rug knowledge — grew in thirty years to become one of the Netherlands' most renowned addresses for authentic hand-knotted rugs.
The move to the Randstad followed in 2007 with the opening of our second gallery in Amstelveen — to provide personal advice to customers from Amsterdam and its surroundings close to home. Ten years later, in 2018, we opened our third branch in the center of Hilversum. Since then, we have served the Gooi region and its surroundings from a central location on 's Gravelandseweg.
What hasn't changed in all these years: our specialization, our passion, and our way of working. No mass-produced items, no sales pressure, no intermediaries — only authentic hand-knotted rugs, personally selected and with expert advice.
Our three galleries
What makes us different
Our collection — what we gather for you
With us, you don't buy a mass-produced item. Every rug in our collection is hand-knotted or woven from 100% wool or silk, vegetable-dyed, and unique. Our prices range from approximately €1,450 for smaller pieces to €35,000 for exceptional museum-worthy items.
Persian rugs
Classic hand-knotted rugs from Iran — Nain, Tabriz, Heriz, Kashan, Isphahan. Classic or modern, all common sizes.
Kilims
Our specialty since 1994. Anatolian, Afghan, and Iranian weaving traditions — flat-woven, double-sided, often vegetable-dyed.
Berber rugs
Moroccan handcraft from the Atlas Mountains — Beni Ouarain, Boucherouite. Ideal for modern interiors.
Gabbeh carpets
Robust, thickly knotted rugs from Iranian shepherds — 100% wool, often in bright natural colors.
Antique rugs
Our collection of 65+ pieces 80–130 years old — Persian, Senneh kilims, Kuba Soumac, and even Dutch heritage.
Vintage & recoloured
Reused antique rugs with a contemporary twist — sustainable, unique, no two are alike.
Our ethos — a rug for life
A good hand-knotted rug is not a consumer good — it is an investment that lasts for generations. We believe in the value of something lasting in a throwaway culture. Our rugs are made as they have been for centuries: by hand, with natural materials, with patience.
This has three implications for the way we work:
- Authentic or nothing — we do not sell machine-woven rugs, no "vintage style" reproductions, no synthetic fibers. Only hand-knotted or woven from 100% wool or silk, vegetable-dyed.
- Sustainability as a byproduct — a rug that lasts 100 years instead of 5, that is sustainability in the most concrete sense. Our antique and recycled collections demonstrate this principle in practice.
- Lifelong support — did you buy a rug from us in 2003? We still assist you now with advice, maintenance, cleaning, restoration, or valuation. Buying a rug from us is the beginning of a long relationship.
Our services
A word from the owner
"For me, a rug is not just floor covering, but a life story. Every knot is made by a person, every color comes from a plant, every design carries centuries of tradition. What I started in Groningen in 1994, I still do today with the same conviction: finding the right rugs for people who want to enjoy them for a lifetime. Come visit one of our galleries — a cup of coffee, a quiet conversation, and you'll immediately see what we believe in." — Gijs Hamming, owner
