Old Turkish and Persian hand-knotted carpets of very high quality are given a new lease of life. They are shorn short to almost the pile to achieve the desired vintage look, and then receive a dyeing treatment.
Old carpet, antique or vintage — what's the difference?
An old carpet is simply a hand-knotted rug that has been used for decades — those years give the wool its soft sheen and character. When we speak of an antique carpet, it generally refers to old carpets roughly eighty years or older, with their original colours and patina; these can be found in our collection of antique carpets & old rugs. A vintage rug is an old Persian or Turkish carpet that is deliberately given a second life: shorn short and re-dyed (recoloured) into a contemporary piece. So if you are looking for an old Persian carpet in its original state, look under antique — if you want the quality of old carpets in a modern colour, you've come to the right place. Prefer a flat-woven kilim rug with a vintage character? That weaving tradition is also centuries old.
