Always genuinely hand-knotted — never machine-made. Every Persian rug in this collection has been made by hand, knot by knot, from natural wool and vegetable dyes; you buy a guaranteed original piece, not a machine-woven or “inspired by” rug. No two pieces are alike: every Persian rug is unique. Since 1994 our advisers have personally vouched for the origin and quality of every handmade rug.

Origin of Persian rugs

Persian rugs are knotted not only in Iran, but also in neighbouring countries. Think of Afghanistan, Turkey, India and more. Strictly speaking, “Oriental rugs” might be the better term. Traditional Persian rugs come from cities such as Nain, Kashan, Tabriz and Heriz, each with its own signature in knot, colour and design. What they all have in common is that they are hand-knotted — knot by knot with the Persian knot — and of very high quality. The rich patterns are often rather classic, sometimes floral, sometimes geometric and sometimes featuring (centuries-) old symbols; the handwork creates refined, unique patterns that you will not find in a machine-made rug. Most “Persians” are knotted from hand-spun wool, although there are also some silk pieces among them. What is surprising about these rugs is that they suit a great many interior styles. They naturally look beautiful in a classic interior and semi-classic settings, but a real Persian can shine just as well in a sleek modern interior. In terms of quality, you are buying a rug for life: virtually indestructible and wonderfully easy to maintain.

High-quality materials, exceptional quality

Every rug in our collection is made from high-quality materials: the wool comes from sheep in mountain regions and is spun by hand and dyed with vegetable dyes. Wool and silk behave differently: wool gives warmth and resilience, silk gives sheen and draws the finest details. That gives these handmade rugs their deep colours and refined designs, which stay beautiful for generations. Whether a Persian rug was made in Iran or in one of the neighbouring countries, you can feel and see the exceptional quality of the craftsmanship straight away. Thanks to the strong wool, these rugs are also ideal for busy rooms such as the living room, dining room and hallway — natural materials with a long life.

Knot density, fine knotting and silk rugs

Knot density — the number of knots per square decimetre — determines how fine the pattern is and partly determines the value of a Persian rug. Finely knotted types such as Nain and Tabriz have a high knot density, so they render the fine patterns of a medallion or floral tendril razor-sharp; sturdier nomadic and village rugs, such as a Kazak or Shasavan, are more coarsely knotted, but that is exactly what makes them bold and hard-wearing. Most Persians are knotted with the asymmetrical Persian (Senneh) knot around cotton warp threads; the number of warp threads per centimetre determines how fine the knotting can be. Silk rugs and rugs with silk accents — think of a Nain with silk or a Hereke — form the finest segment: the silk adds sheen and allows the highest knot density. Would you like to know what fine knotting means for the price? Our advisers will show you the difference in the gallery, and our guide to Persian rugs explains it step by step.

A Persian rug in every interior

A Persian rug fits surprisingly well into almost any interior style. In a classic interior, the rich colours and intricate patterns reinforce the warm, oriental atmosphere; a classic Persian rug with a medallion is naturally at home there. In a sleek modern or eclectic room, such a rug creates a beautiful contrast. Choose one large rug as a calm centre under the seating area, or combine several Persian rugs for a layered, personal look in Persian style. Not sure which rug suits you best? With our free home viewing service you see it in your own home straight away.

Persian rugs by colour

Persian rugs come in almost every colour scheme, and the colours vary by origin: from the deep tones — deep red, dark blue, gold — of classic city rugs to the vivid colours of nomadic rugs. Popular choices are a blue Persian rug, a warm red Persian rug and calm shades such as beige, green and pink. From a classic deep-blue medallion to a soft beige Persian rug — with traditional colours as well as fresh, varied palettes, our advisers will gladly help you choose the right colour and the right pattern for your interior.

Sizes and shapes

We have Persian rugs in all sizes and various shapes: from a small rug for the hallway or beside the bed to a large rug of 250 x 350 cm or more for the seating area. The popular size 200 x 300 cm is well stocked. Want to see all types in this size side by side? View all rugs 200 x 300 cm — and for generous rooms the rugs of 250 x 350 cm and larger. Looking for something special? Think of a round Persian rug or a narrow Persian runner for the hallway or corridor.

Frequently asked questions about Persian rugs

What is a Persian rug?

A Persian rug is a hand-knotted rug made of natural wool or silk, traditionally from Iran (formerly Persia) and the surrounding regions. Every piece is made by hand, knot by knot, which makes it unique.

Where are Persian rugs made?

Most rugs in our collection are made in Iran, the old Persia. These rugs are also knotted in Afghanistan, Turkey, India and Pakistan — using the same centuries-old techniques and the same high-quality wool.

How can you recognise a genuine Persian rug?

You can recognise a genuine, hand-knotted Persian rug by the slightly irregular knots on the back, the pattern that runs through the knots and the use of natural wool or silk — not a uniform, machine-made underside. Also read: how to recognise a genuine Persian rug.

How is a Persian rug knotted?

A Persian rug is knotted entirely by hand on a vertical loom. Row by row, the knotter ties thousands of individual knots — often the so-called Persian (Senneh) knot — around the cotton warp threads. After each row a weft thread is beaten down, and finally the pile is sheared to height. A single rug often takes months of work, which makes every piece unique.

Why is a Persian rug so expensive?

A single rug is often knotted by hand over many months, using high-quality wool or silk and natural dyes. That craftsmanship, combined with the rarity of finely knotted and antique pieces, determines the value — and makes it a rug for life.

How much does a Persian rug cost?

Because of the handwork, prices vary widely: from a few hundred euros for smaller rugs to many thousands of euros for large, finely knotted or antique pieces. Vintage pieces and smaller sizes are often considerably more affordable. In our galleries we will gladly advise you on the best choice for your budget and interior.

Do Persian rugs suit a modern interior?

Certainly. A real Persian looks beautiful in classic as well as sleek modern interiors.

How do I care for a Persian rug?

Hand-knotted wool rugs are very easy to care for: vacuum regularly (avoid a rotating brush), blot a stain immediately with a slightly damp cloth and avoid aggressive cleaning products. An occasional professional clean keeps the colours fresh.
